چکیده

[1] Remote detection and measurement of the slowly varying continuing current that follows some lightning return strokes is difficult. Slow changes in quasi-static electric fields have been most frequently used to remotely measure continuing current. Because of the rapid attenuation of dipole electric fields with distance, though, the range over which the current will produce a measurable signature in the field is limited. Here we report the analysis of continuing current signatures observed in both the quasi-static electric and magnetic fields from four lightning strokes that were recorded from a range of 52 to 96 km at a measurement site near Fort Collins, Colorado on 15 July 2005. Electroand magnetostatic analyses show that the distinct magnetic and electric field signatures are produced by the continuing current and the associated net charge transfer, respectively. The measurements confirm that the quasi-static magnetic fields that follow some return strokes are signatures of continuing current. Using realistic noise estimates based on our measurements, we also show that modest to large continuing currents can be reliably detected and measured from long ranges (more than 1000 km for 1 kA) using quasi-static magnetic field signatures.

Coordinated analysis of delayed sprites with high-speed images and remote electromagnetic fields

[1] Simultaneous measurements of high-altitude optical emissions and magnetic fields produced by sprite-associated lightning discharges enable a close examination of the link between low-altitude lightning processes and high-altitude sprite processes. We report results of the coordinated analysis of high-speed sprite video and wideband magnetic field measurements recorded simultaneously at Yucc...

Indirect Estimation of Lightning Currents from Remote Electromagnetic Field Measurements

In this lecture, the theoretical basis for the deterministic and statistical estimation of the lightning current from distant field measurements is presented. The influence of the presence of an elevated strike object on the peak of the lightning return stroke current determined from remote field measurements is also discussed.

Subionospheric propagation and peak currents of preliminary breakdown pulses before negative cloud-to-ground lightning discharges

We analyze broadband electromagnetic measurements of pulse sequences occurring prior to first return strokes of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. Signals generated by lightning discharges were recorded close to the thunderstorm by a magnetic field receiver and traveled up to 600km to three distant electric field receivers. We found that amplitudes of observed preliminary breakdown pul...

Unusually intense continuing current in lightning produces delayed mesospheric breakdown

Ultra low frequency magnetic field measurements made 500–2000 km from positive lightning discharges show a signature that is consistent with unusually high amplitude cloud-to-ground continuing lightning current. The magnitude of this nearly constant current moment is as large as 60 kA km and can last at half this amplitude for longer than 150 ms, thereby moving 640 C or more (assuming a 7 km ve...

Charge moment change and lightning-driven electric fields associated with negative sprites and halos

[1] Sprites are structured high altitude optical emissions produced by lightning-driven electric fields. Both strong positive and negative cloud to ground flashes (CGs) are capable of initiating sprites. However, reported sprites are almost exclusively produced by +CGs. The very limited number of negative polarity sprites makes it difficult to reveal their morphologies and mechanisms. Since 200...
